The MK 17 is now in widespread use by United States SOF forces in Afghanistan, where its relative light weight, accuracy and stopping power has proved of worth on the battlefield. Both the FNH SCAR 17S 308 and the FN SCAR 16S rifle feature short-stroke gas-piston operation, MIL-STD 1913 rails at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock positions, a hammer-forged, free-floating barrel with compensator, and a telescoping side-folding polymer stock.
I like my older SIG pistols, but SIG as a rifle company is relatively new and to my knowledge none of their rifles has any widespread use in military units, much less US military units.
LRB M14 VS SCAR 17S MOD
The MK 17 Mod 0 is complemented by the MK 16 Mod 0 of similar design, chambered in 5.56mmx45mm. US forces use the M14 and SCAR 17 (depending on unit, position, etc). The MK 17 features 4 Picatinny rails (top, sides and bottom) which can mount any MIL-STD-1913-compatible accessories such as optics, foregrips and a MK 13 40mm grenade launcher. The barrels are designed to be easily exchanged to alter the weapon's role ie from sniper rifle, to battle rifle, to CQB weapon. The MK 17 comes in 3 flavors - the Standard, with 16 inch barrel, the CQC with a 13 inch barrel and the LB with a 20 inch barrel. Maybe the LRB integrated mount receiver SCAR 17s is a great gun too and is definitely the solid choice for a modern battle rifle. I own an SAI 'loaded' edition M1A and another one that I built up from a Fulton Armory barreled receiver and CMP M14 Parts kit. Steel may be more durable than polymer and aluminum, but the SCAR was purpose built for special forces and if there were durability problems with the rifle someone in combat would have discovered that the hard way. The MK 17 Mod 0 SCAR-H is a 7.62mm x 51mm carbine / assault / sniper rifle that has been chosen by SOCOM to evenbtually replace a number of existing weapons used by US Special Operations Forces (SOF). Any 'real' M14 is going to be an NFA item due to the select-fire capability so you're really limited to commercial copies, unless you have tens of thousands of dollars to spend. The HK-91 is a decently accurate rifle, but its not in the same league as a SCAR 17S or properly built M-14.
